Watermelon Place Setting

Measures 10" x 7"

These summer place settings are as sweet and fresh as the melon image painted on the vinyl mats. Glossy, watermelon seed napkin rings made from clay, make the perfect companion to that large juicy slice. Create a couple or a bunch. This could be a fun family project. Of course there may be one drawback - you may have a melon craving before you finish!

Directions

COVER EXPOSED AREAS TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL OVER SPRAY. ALLOW PAINT TO DRY BETWEEN STEPS.

step 1 - Cut the orange and pink clay into thin slices and condition.  Blend them together with a roller or pasta machine to create the watermelon color.  Cut the clay into a 1.25” x 7” strip, or the size that will fit your round cookie cutter.  Wrap heavy-duty foil around the cutter followed by the clay strip.  Adjust the size if necessary.  Blend the ends together to create a ring.

step 2 - Condition and roll out the black clay.  Place kitchen plastic wrap over the clay.  Use the .75” teardrop shaped clay cutter to form the watermelon seeds.  I used 18 seeds on each napkin rings.

step 4 - Place the napkin ring on a foil lined pan in the oven and allow to bake at 275 degrees for 30 minutes.  Cool completely before removing the foil liner.  Brush the clay with Diamond Glaze.  Place a skewer through the ring and wedge it into a drawer so the clay can dry without any of it’s sides touching a surface.

step 7 - Bring the card stock pieces together at the center so that the lower curved edges are positioned 1.75” from the side edges of the mat.  Mix a little yellow with the green pant to get an accurate green for the rind.

step 8 - Using a find nozzle, airbrush a fine line along the curved edges of the mat with green paint.  With a broader nozzle, airbrush lightly between the fine line and the template.  Remove the template when the paint is dry and rub Acrylic cleaner across the broader paint application to bring out some of the yellow.

step 9 - Remove the template and lay a piece of cheesecloth or other netted type fabric across the mat.  Mix pink and orange paint to achieve the watermelon color. Hold a waded tissue over the rind area to protect it as you airbrush the surface.  Reposition the tissue unevenly around the mat as you paint.

step 11 -  Cut teardrop shapes into a piece of card stock to use as a stencil for airbrushing black seeds on the mat.  If you’re comfortable with your artistic ability, draw the seeds free hand with a permanent marker.
