Surprise your sweetheart at a remote location with a romantic picnic whether your idea includes a meal or simply wine and chocolates. The tote interior is big enough to carry a bottle of wine and two glasses and then some. The front pocket easily accommodates a small box of candy, a wine opener and a large engagement ring! Toast a sunrise or a sunset by reciting a sonnet from the Portuguese printed on the front pocket. Bring out this tote bag for Valentine's day or any time love is in the air! The pocket text and hearts graphic is one image and free when you download the instructions.

Directions

step 1 - Cut out all fabric pieces (see the details at the bottom of this page). Download the pocket image and print it on Craft Attitude film following the spray adhesive method that comes with the product. The image is deliberately backward so it will print correctly.

step 1 - Cut out all fabric pieces (see the details at the bottom of this page). Download the pocket image and print it on Craft Attitude film following the spray adhesive method that comes with the product. The image is deliberately backward so it will print correctly.

step 2 - I chose to spray the vinyl with Super 77 Adhesive instead of spraying the image.  Center the printed film image side down and a half inch from the bottom edge of the vinyl.

step 3 - Sew the wrong side of the lining fabric to the right side of the vinyl with a half inch seam allowance at the top edge. Turn wrong sides together and topstitch 1/2 inch from the seam.

step 3 - Sew the wrong side of the lining fabric to the right side of the vinyl with a half inch seam allowance at the top edge. Turn wrong sides together and topstitch 1/2 inch from the seam.

step 4 - Position the pocket on the tote front centered 3" away from each side and 13 inches from the top raw edge. The image side of the pocket should be facing the right side of the tote front.

step 5 -  Sew the pocket to the vinyl with a half inch seam allowance.

step 6 -Trim the seam and turn the pocket right side up.

step 7 -Tape the center pocket in place to keep it from moving.

step 7 -Tape the center pocket in place to keep it from moving.

step 8 - Tape the outside edge of each ribbon piece 2” from the tote sides along the length of the vinyl. There should be seven inches between the two ribbons and they should slightly overlap the red printed line of the pocket edges.  Top stitch both long edges of the ribbons.

step 9 - With right sides together, sew the tote's left and right side seams top to bottom.

step 10 - Flatten out the bottom point of the right and left seams in a pyramid shape.  Press with your hands to create temporary creases on angled edges. Place a ruler across the layers, aligning the 1.50” ruler mark with the side seam stitching.  There should be 1.50” of fabric to the left and right of center giving you 3’ total (not shown).  Make a line against the ruler with a pen or tape.  Machine stitch across the ruled lines to create the flat 3” bottom of the tote.

step 11 - Sew the side seams of the lining leaving the bottom open.  Do the same for the fleece.

step 12 - (Optional:  Give the top edge of the tote more body by gluing or sewing a 1.25” wide strip of fleece to the top edge.) Slide the lining up over the tote with the right sides facing each other.  Match side seams and the top edges.  Do the same with the fleece.  Stitch through all layers around the top edge of the tote.  Turn right side out and topstitch the seam allowance to the lining.

step 13 - On the wrong side of the fleece fabric, stitch the bottom 2” in from the side seams leaving the bottom center open.  Flatten the bottom corners as you did with the vinyl to create the flat bottom. Sew the corners. Do the same with the lining.

step 14 - Turn right side out by pushing the vinyl through the fleece and lining.  Push both layers down into the bag creating a one inch vinyl facing at the top of the tote.

step 15 - Attach the four grommets to the center top of each ribbon.  Follow grommet package directions.

step 16 - Insert one end of a 16” piece of ribbon into the left front grommet and the other end into the right.  Tie double knots in the ribbon ends.  Run glue along the raw edges to prevent the ribbon from fraying.
