How To Create Your Own Peyote Stitch Bracelet Designs

If you’ve ever had ideas for your own peyote stitch bracelet designs, here's a simple way to take them from a simple idea to a finished bracelet. The first step is to start with a basic form to fit your wrist. Once you have that, you can alter any basic peyote stitch pattern with unlimited options for color placement, and design. And the best part is your bracelet will be completely unique.

Create your form in Photoshop, Silhouette Studio design software or any drawing program that allows you to make squares, group them, align them and change their color. You won’t have to create every single square in the form. The process is far more simple, as you will see.

Peyote stitch bracelets can be made with many different size beads and as many columns as you would like. You can make those decisions after you have your form made. The directions here will result in a 7/8” wide form for 8/0 Delica seed beads.

Directions

step 1 - Draw your first square 3mm in size with a white fill and a black outline. This will match the size of an 8/0 Delica seed bead. Copy the square and paste it on the page.

step 2 - Stack the two squares with the left edges aligned to begin your first column.  Group the two squares.

step 4 - Select the entire column and copy and paste it on the page. Align column two against the right side of column one. The top bead of column two should be placed halfway down the first bead in column one. Group the two columns. Copy and paste.

step 5 - Continue copy and pasting until you have eight columns.  You now have the basic form for your peyote stitch bracelet. Save a backup copy in case you accidentally delete or alter the file.

step 6 - It’s time to create your design. Select all the squares and ungroup them so you can add color to each. Try filling the squares with color or shades of color. Select one or several squares at a time to add color. Play with color placement to create a pattern that's completely your own.

When working with larger beads, you can proportionally enlarge your basic form so the squares match the beads in size. If you do that, don’t forget to adjust the length by deleting rows on either end of the form.
