Floral Reflections Mirror

Finished project measures 12”

Soft hues color the flowers used to decorate the back side of this Pearl clay hand mirror.  Make this bouquet quickly with the help of teardrop-shaped clay cutters.  The detailing on the handle is done with a texture wheel.  Small flower accents adorn and overlap the mirror’s edge.  This project would make a lovely gift or a uniquely decorative accessory to display on your very own bureau.

IMPORTANT NOTE - Setting numbers vary on clay conditioning machines.  On my Sculpey machine the thickest setting is 1, the thinnest is 9.

Directions

step 1 - To achieve the dark pink color, roll thin sheets of Fuchsia, Ballerina, and White clay together.  Slice a .50” wide piece from the roll and run it through the conditioning machine until you reach the blended shade you like.

step 2 - The Mirror Handle Wrap scotch tape around the top and bottom of three chop sticks that fit flush with each other.  The tape will temporarily hold the sticks in place while you wrap them in clay. Chopsticks can be replaced with any sturdy base for the handle like a piece of yardstick or any wood.  The ideal material will be firm but thin.  I used chopsticks because it was all that was available when I started this project but thinner material would have been a better aesthetic choice.)

step 3 - Cut .50” Inch strips from Pearl clay and join them, blending the edges until you have a long enough strip to spiral around your mirror handle from top to bottom.  Before you wrap the handle, roll across the long strip with the vine design texture wheel.

step 4 - Wrap the strip around the sticks loosely at the top and bottom.  Once the wrap is in place, undo the wrap enough to remove the tape.  Replace the wrap and cut straight across the ends.  Smooth the cut ends together. Place the handle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the oven at 275 degrees for 30 minutes.   Allow to cool completely.

step 5 - The Round Mirror Base While the handle is baking, roll out two pieces of pearl clay as wide as you can with the conditioning machine on the thickest setting.  Cut a straight edge on both to blend them together Into one piece slightly larger than a 6” pot lid. Create an identical piece in the same way and set it aside.

step 9 - Using the shape of the pot lid as your guide, cut out the second round piece, this time without texture. Place the frame onto this piece.  Center the mirror inside it to be sure the frame shape has not been distorted when moving it.  When you’re sure it’s correct, remove the mirror.

step 10 - Flip the clay base onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, textured frame face down.  Press the baked handle against the center of the round shape.  Place crumpled aluminum foil under the handle to keep it horizontally level with the base.

step 13 - All flowers and leaves are cut with teardrop cutters.  Use different size cutters to vary the leaves and flower petals.  The leaves are positioned with the pointy ends facing out as opposed to the flowers which have the pointy ends facing in.  Place leaves and petal pieces into the palm of your hand and press on them with your index finger to remove the thickness of their outer edges.  Place them on the work surface and press an Etch n' Pearl tool into the centers and fold the outer edges toward the tool.  Flower petals are created with a thin layer of Pearl clay joined with the chosen petal color.  The Pearl color is on the underside of the petals.

step 14 - Arrange the petals and leaves surrounding the handle and scattered about the rest of the base.

step 17 - Remove the cushion pads on the backside of the mirror.  Use glue to attach the mirror inside theclay frame.  Create a few more petals and leaves to attach to the frame.  Bake them as the others.  Once cool, attach pearls and glue the flowers to the frame slightly overlapping the mirror’s edge.
