GLITTERWARE

Silverware Just Got Blinged!

- ON THE TABLE -

Impractical?  Absolutely!  But so much fun to look at.  You don’t throw this silverware in the dishwasher - maybe you don’t even use it to serve food.  It’s your call.  But this is certainly a creative accent to adorn any party table.  Is there a wedding on your calendar?  Wrap pearls and silver lined crystals around the handle of a cake server and present it as a one-of-a-kind wedding gift.  There’s no limit to the possibilities for designing Glitterware.

To create Glitterware for any occasion, start with beads and wire and let your imagination run wild!

DIRECTIONS

When it comes to directions there are no specifics to fit every design.  I used 20 gauge wire for each of my Glitterware pieces.  You can also use 24 gauge FunWire which is a bit softer.

Each project will be created with the number of beads and the length of wire required for the silverware you are using.  To give you an idea of how much you will need, I used approximately 4 feet of wire for my midnight blue spoon.  The more “wraps” you do, the more wire will be required.  Here are helpful tips to guide you in creating your own project.

  1. You can start and end your design with Vicky’s very pretty spiral.  It takes about 3” of wire for a 1/2” wide circle.  See my Button And Beads Earring which explains how to make the spiral.

  2. Designs can also begin and end by simply tucking ends into the wires wrapped at the back of the silverware.

  3. When wrapping wire around the silverware, do not create a bend in the wire until your are sure of how many beads you want on that width of wire.

  4. Since the width of the silverware changes as you work from the base to the top, the number of beads you will need to fill the space will naturally change.  Be sure to measure to determine what combination will work in that space.  Be creative.  Use large and small beads when you’re confronted with a spacing problem.

  5. Try to plan a design pattern before you begin.  You can do this by measuring the silverware handle and the diameter for the kinds of beads you intend to attach.

  6. When there is a question about fit, slip beads on a spare piece of wire to determine how much horizontal space they will occupy.

  7. Mixing large and small beads or different shapes or colors will create a more appealing design than one that uses the same bead over and over.  (See Vicky’s interesting creation!)

  8. Some beads have more vertical length as opposed to horizontal width.  Keep this in mind as you plan your design.  Wrap wire around the handle 3 or 4 times when needed to fill in vertical spacing to avoid beads or charms overlapping each other.

  9. I started my leaf design by simply attaching jump rings to each of the 6 leaf charms that hang at the bottom.  Then I attached each ring to each other and then to one final jump ring.  That final jump ring was strung onto wire after slipping on two round silver beads.  I followed that with two more round beads then wrapped the wire around the silverware stem. To create this minimal design I wrapped more wire around the stem 3 or 4 times then stretched the wire upwards and added the small leaf and bead accents at the top.

  10. The silverware designs pictured here are one-sided, mainly because they are meant for display purposes only. You can create Glitterware with beads on both the top and underside of the silverware if you choose.

GUEST DIVA

Vicky/ Long Beach, CA

Vicky came to me with this project idea and the serving spoon she decorated.  She bought her naked silverware at a discount store making this a very affordable gift.  Her charming design included the message of hope engraved in a bead.  A special gift for a friend in need of encouragement?

Vicky challenged me to come up with my own ideas for designing Glitterware for special occasions.  I had so much fun with this concept I had to reign in my enthusiasm.  Flooded with ideas, I had to stop at the three examples below.  How far away is Christmas?  I can’t wait to come up with holiday designs.  Thank you Vicky, for generously bringing me this very unique concept to share.
