DIRECTIONS

  1. 1.Each petal group is cut from one 2” square. Cut several squares using scissors or a rotary cutter and a ruler.  We used a total of 48 squares for our tank top.

  2. 2.Fold each square in half, then in half again.

  3. 3.Holding the folded point of the square, trim the angles from the sides to create curved edges.  You now have a group of four petals.

  4. 4.Place your first group in the very center front of the neckline about a half inch from the edge of the neckband.

  5. 5.Using a matching thread color, stitch one small tack at the folded point, attaching the group to the shirt.

  6. 6.Place the next group in the same way with the curved edges of the petals slightly overlapping.  Continue to work up the left neckline to the shoulder seam, where you will attach the last group.

  7. 7.Work the right side of the neckline in the same way until you have completely filled it with a single row of petals.

  8. 8.Attach the second row of petals by centering each new group in between two groups of the first row.  Move the new group up under the first row so the tacking isn’t visible.

Optional:  Attach colorful seed beads over the tack stitch on each petal group.

Here’s an easy way to infuse personality into a purchased tee, tank, strappy top, or any shirt of your choice. The spandex petal edges don’t need hemming, making this a quick project.  Just cut out and attach a row of petals to the neckline with a simple tacking stitch.  Add a second row and you’ll have a profusion of petals.  So easy!  The number of petals you will need will be determined by the size and shape of your neckline.  Add naked petals or dress them up as we did with multicolored earth-tone seed beads.  Experiment by using strong contrasting petal colors, petals the same color as the shirt, or mix several colors together.  You’ll find lightweight spandex available in enough colors to quench your creative thirst!

TIPS

When attaching a group to the shirt, don’t fuss over trying to keep the petals stacked perfectly one on top of the other.  The affect will be more appealing if some of the petals fan out in uneven ways.

As you work up the sides of the neckline, attach the groups with the folded points positioned vertically on the shirt as opposed to having them positioned like spokes of a wheel.  Petals will flop over instead of hang straight down if they are not vertical.
