PATRIOTIC PINWHEELS

What You’ll Need
• card stock
• plain paper
• thick needle
• scissors or craft knife
• wine cork
• nailhead wire
• plastic water bottle cap
• hot glue gun
• enamel paint maker (optional)
• plastic straw
• red bead
• round nose pliers
• silver ribbon
• wood dowel

Download the template and instructions. Print out the flag image on card stock.
Place the template over the printed page. Use a thick needle to poke a whole through the paper center and through the printed square. Use the needle to also poke holes in the four corner circles on the template. Cut on the four diagonal green lines from the outer edge to the black horizontal lines. Set aside.
Using hot glue, secure the cork into the bottle cap with the nail head against the cap.
Cut 1/2” from a plastic straw and slide it over the wire, gluing it to the cork. If you can’t find a red, white, or blue straw, you can color it with an enamel paint marker.
When the glue is set in the cap, slip the wire through the center hole in the printed square. Bring up the corner pieces and slip the wire through the holes, one at a time.
Slide a red bead on the wire, then form a loop in the wire end with round nose pliers.

Oh beautiful for spacious skies, and pinwheels blowing in the breeze!
Show your patriotism any day of the year with these pinwheels on your lawn or walkway. Or make a bunch and hand them out at your July 4th gathering. They only take a few minutes to assemble and cost pennies to make. My pinwheel is seven inches but you can make yours any size. You may already have all the supplies you need at home. Use the flag images included with my template and instructions, or find images of your own. You may see the perfect paper for your pinwheel at craft and scrapbooking stores. Cut into a square, poke holes and you’re on your way !

Print the red and blue page on the reverse side of the flag.
Download and print the pinwheel template on regular paper.
Use a craft knife to slice of a round from a wine cork that will fit snugly into a plastic water bottle cap. The round should be about 1/8” thick.
With the needle, bore a hole into the center of the cork piece. Slip a nail head wire through it.

Glue silver ribbon to the dowel. Apply a glob of glue to the bottle cap and press it to the dowel. Hold in place until the glue is completely set.
