DIRECTIONS

  1. 1.Remove links of the chain to make it 16 inches long.

  2. 2. Since you will need a bit of leather to insert into the crimp when you finish the necklace, leave a 1/4” tail of leather beyond the first chain link when you start weaving the leather in and out of the chain.  Links on the pictured chain are 1/4” wide, as is the leather trim.

  3. 3. When you finish weaving and reach the end of the chain, cut the leather 1/4’ longer than the last chain link.

  4. 4. Next, attach the last link to the leather.  Since the crimp end will only hold the leather strip, attaching the link to the leather will keep the chain ends from sliding down the leather strip.  With a punch or sharp pointy object, make a hole in the leather aligned with the end of the last link.  Open the link and slip one end through the hole.  Now close the link.

  5. 5. Center the 1/4” leather tail in a crimp end.  With pliers, fold one side of the crimp down on the leather to hold it.  Repeat with the other side of the crimp.  To protect the crimp metal finish from being scratched by the pliers, cover the metal with a small piece of satin ribbon or any solid weave fabric.

  6. 6.  Attach a clasp to the crimp ends using jump rings.

  7. 7. Open one leftover link of the chain and use it to attach the pendant in the center of the necklace.

TIPS & SHORTCUTS

You will end up with more leather than necessary because it’s difficult to determine exactly how long a piece you will need.  It will depend on the thickness of your chain and how tightly you weave the leather.  If you buy leather the same length as the chain, the leather will be too short after you weave it.

Use the concept for this necklace to create one of your choice using other materials.  You can use any size or finish chain and a variety of materials for weaving.  Try sheer ribbon!  It makes an interesting contrast to the chain.  Whatever you choose, just be sure your weaving material and chain links are the same width.

WOVEN CHAIN NECKLACE

MAKE THIS IN MINUTES - REALLY!

A labor free necklace that looks complicated but beautiful.  A piece of rusty brown leather trim is woven through a length of chain.  A link of the chain is used to connect the purchased pendant.  Crimp ends are attached to the leather and a clasp is hooked to the ends.  Time yourself.  You won’t believe how quickly you’ll finish this!

Look for large crimp ends like these which will accommodate the 1/4” wide leather.

The back side of the crimp end shows the metal flattened against the leather.

16” necklace

Attach the last link to the leather.

Center leather in the crimp end.

Attach the clasp.
