What You’ll Need

  1. 9” chain

  2. 6 toggle clasps

  3. 12 jump rings

  4. pliers

  5. wire cutters

This project began with a desire for a necklace that suits your varied fashion choices.  By repeating one  section several times, you can make it long enough to accent any outfit, or make it short enough to wear as a choker.  You determine the length and the focus.  Will the silver accent be a center piece or will it repeat around the neck in equal dimensions?  You decide.

The foundation that makes this concept work, is a simple toggle that is open on one end and has a closed loop on the other.

MAKE IT SHORT

MAKE IT LONG

A versatile toggle necklace that adjusts to your mood.

Costs listed do not include everyday household items like glue, tools, or items costing less than $1.00 per project.

The visual beauty of this necklace is obvious but the practical beauty is its versatility.  Add sections to create a longer length, remove them to make it shorter.  It’s so simple!  The best part - you don’t even need special jewelry- making knowledge to create it.

  1. 2. Now attach a toggle to the ring on one end only.

  1. 4. To string the sections together slip a jump ring onto the open end of the toggle.   Continue adding sections until the necklace is the length you want.

DIRECTIONS

  1. 1.Cut a 1.5” piece of chain.  Attach a jump ring to both ends.   See “Rings” on our Jewelry Techniques page if you are unsure of how to properly open and close the rings.

We found ours at JoAnn’s, four per package.  It’s meant to be a toggle clasp, but we decided to use it as a major design piece in this versatile necklace.  If you can’t find this particular piece look for toggles and other jewelry findings with similar features - open on one end, closed with a loop on the other.

  1. 3. This section is the basis for the necklace.  Create as many as you like.  The more you have, the longer you can make your necklace.  Each additional section will add 2.50” to the  finished 15” necklace length.

The silver toggle may be the centerpiece (above) or it may repeat around the neck (below), depending on how many sections you string together.
