THE LUXURIOUS

LEATHER
NAPKIN RING

LEATHER... RIBBON... CORD...
AND SO MUCH MORE

Our concept for an easy to make and affordable napkin ring starts with a simple base - clear plastic sheets cut into strips.  It’s pliable and comfortable to work with, yet sturdy enough to hold its shape.  Cut it and wrap it into a ring. Attach anything onto it - beads, ribbon, sequins, buttons, rhinestones, fabric.   And do it all with just a hot glue gun.

Your end product is limited only by your imagination.  We’ve included a couple of different ideas to nudge you along, in addition to instructions for the rhinestone buckle ring and the leather ring.  The black and gold ring is made the same way as the leather ring.

TIPS & SHORTCUTS

Rhinestone buckles can often be found on eBay for less than $1 in quantity.  They are also available at  craft stores and the notions counter of fabric shops.

The trim or ribbon you select for your rings will determine their width.  Experiment.  Consider one centerpiece jewelry part glued to the ribbon, or beads dangling all around the ring.  The possibilities are endless!

Two strips of this leather and satin cord trim make the rich leather napkin ring.

Two strips of this metallic cord trim make the elegant black and gold ring.

Sheer wire edge ribbon and this killer rhinestone buckle accent the dazzling blue napkin ring.

THE LEATHER NAPKIN RING

We used two strips of purchased leather and satin cording found in JoAnn’s trim department.  While it makes an extravagant statement, by the yard, it’s affordable on most any budget.

Easy and quick to make, you’ll want to create different style napkin rings for different table gatherings.  Why?  Because you can!  Here’s how to do it.

DIRECTIONS FOR LEATHER RING

  1. 1.Cut a strip of plastic 5.25” long and a little less than 1” wide so it won’t extend beyond the leather strip edges when completed.  Use a craft knife or scissors.

  2. 2.The leather trim is .50” wide.  Cut two leather strips 6” long to create a 1” wide napkin ring.  Because this particular cord has a tendency to fray, coat the ends with Krazy Glue immediately after cutting.  You can also use a product made to stop fraying if you have it.

  3. 3.Put down a piece of painter’s tape .25” from one edge of the plastic strip.  This will be your guide for overlapping the two ends.  Place a light line of hot glue between the tape and the plastic edge.  Form the ring by bending the plastic strip and overlapping the two ends.  Hold them securely together until the glue has cooled.  Remove the tape.

  4. 4.Attach the two leather strips side-by-side to the plastic strip using hot glue.  Work your way around the ring gluing one strip, then the other.  When you get back to where you started, cut just enough excess away so that the two ends meet flush.  Treat the ends to stop them from fraying.

DIRECTIONS FOR RHINESTONE BUCKLE RING

  1. 1.Cut a strip of plastic 5.25” long and a little less than 1.25” wide so it won’t extend beyond the edges of the 1.25” ribbon.  Use a craft knife or scissors.

  2. 2.Follow step #3 above.

  3. 3.Cut a 9” strip of ribbon.  Don’t worry about angling the ends just yet.  Thread one end of the ribbon through the buckle.  Repeat with the other end passing over the first.

  4. 4.Slip the ribbon around the plastic ring.  Pull the ribbon ends until the ribbon fits snugly.  The glued plastic overlapped ends should be positioned at the back of the ribbon.

  5. 5.Cut “V” shapes above the buckle and below it to match the angle of the ribbon.  Cut away enough so the plastic is not visible on the borders of the ribbon from it’s narrowest point to its widest.

  6. 6.Place hot glue at the narrowest point of the plastic under the buckle.  Quickly align the buckle over the glue and hold in place until it is secure.

  7. 7.Attach a 3” long piece of double sided tape around the plastic circle between the plastic and the ribbon.  You will have to move away the ribbon to do this.  After the tape is in place, move the ribbon back.  The tape will invisibly keep the ribbon and plastic from moving separately when being handled.

  8. 8.Cut the ends of the ribbon at an angle.
