1. 1. Very lightly sand the edges of the hanger to prevent splinters and wood fibers from lifting up while working.

  2. 2. Print two copies of the image, one for each side, if you will have identical images on the front and the back.

  3. 3. Trace the hanger with the wood positioned over the paper image.  Cut away the excess so you now have a hanger made of paper.  Do the same with the second image.

  4. 4. Read the Mod Podge directions for gluing the paper onto the wood.  Apply the glue with a brush, sponge applicator, or roller.  Be sure to smooth out any air bubbles.  Let the glue dry.

  5. 5. As per the container instructions, apply 2 or 3 coats of sealer, letting them dry thoroughly between each coat.

On hotel room doors they read -

“DO NOT DISTURB”.

DOORKNOB HANGERS WITH A MESSAGE

Get Your Point Across

DIRECTIONS

If you are a perfectionist, paint the edges of the wood a color that will blend with the paper’s image.  Do this before you adhere the image.

Printer toner will run easily if you overwork the first sealer coat by applying it with too many strokes, or if the image gets too saturated.  Try to work quickly covering the entire surface with as few strokes as possible.

Water can be added to the Mod Podge to thin it.  If in doubt as to how thick it should be, experiment with a disposable image first.

Apply the sealer around the edges too. This will keep the image from lifting.

Mod Podge comes in matte or gloss.
