1. 1.Place painters tape across the shirt about thee inches below the neckline to create a straight horizontal line.  Put a vertical mark on the tape to indicate the center front of the shirt.

  2. 2.Position the shirt on top of a hard, flat surface protected by plastic.  Place cardboard inside the shirt where the design will appear. 

  3. 3.Spray the back of the stencil with repositionable stencil spray. 

  4. 4.Place the stencil on the left side of the shirt with the top edge up against the bottom of the painters tape, and the right edge of the design aligned with the shirt center.  Do not align the right edge of the stencil sheet with the shirt center.  Press down to adhere the stencil to the shirt. 

  5. 5.Spray paint the design.

  6. 6.When completely dry, remove the stencil and position it on the right side of the shirt.  Align and match the left edge of the stencil’s design with the right edge of the dry design.  To avoid a gap at the center, look to the pattern on the entire stencil as a guide for how to match the design.  Spray the design.

  7. 7.Remove the stencil when dry.  After 24 hours set the paint by pressing it with an iron.  See the complete instructions on your paint container.

We found this beautiful stencil at Michael’s and couldn’t resist painting another shirt.  Start with a white cotton tee or tank, apply the stencil on one side, paint, then repeat on the other side. Consider alternate ideas like placing the stencil on the shirt hem, at the shoulders, or down one side.  Look for white shirts on clearance and you’ll really create quite a bargain!  Expect to see this stencil on more projects to come.  We’ve air brushed our design but you can paint it with Lumiere olive paint and a brush or sponge if you prefer.  Carefully read the instructions on the paint container you choose.

TIP

If you sew, you can put the design at the cuffs of a long sleeve shirt before sewing the sleeve seams together.  Sewing the shirt also gives you the opportunity to easily place the design at the hem on the front and back shirt pieces and aligning them before sewing.
