PAISLEY FLEUR DE LIS SHIRT
DIRECTIONS
BEFORE PAINTING, ALWAYS WASH AND DRY FABRIC (WITHOUT FABRIC SOFTENER) AND COVER EXPOSED FABRIC TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL OVER SPRAY DURING PAINTING.
1. Match up the shirt’s side seams and shoulders and pin them together. This will help you to find the accurate center front of the shirt. Iron a soft crease in the shirt from the neckline to the hem. This will help you to center your design. Slip cardboard between the shirt front and back to avoid transfer of paint between the layers.
2. Download and print out the stencil. Spray the back of the stencil with repositionable adhesive stencil spray. With a craft knife, cut out the fleur de lis and four stems. You will be using the pieces you cut out so be sure they are not sliced or separated in any way. Set aside.
3. Place the stencil on the shirt, aligning the centerlines of the stencil and shirt. Press down the cut edges.
4. Create the painted outline of the fleur de lis by placing the cutout shape 1/4” away from the stencil. It doesn’t have to be measured precisely. Just get as close as you can. Spray the open space you’ve created with Bronze Have More Fun Paint.
5. Move the stencil to another area, again leaving a 1/4” gutter to catch the paint.Continue until all edges are outlined. It’s not necessary to do this to the four stems as they will be painted solid.
6. Position the paisley stencil over the fleur de lis stencil and hold it down. The paisley stencil will not cover the open space completely so you will work in sections, moving the stencil after spraying one area. When spraying the paint over the paisley stencil, do not paint close to the stencil edge. This will create an unattractive hard line. Just stay well within the boundaries of the stencil as you spray. Dab a tissue against the stencil before you move to a new area to pick up any paint that might transfer. Since this is a metal stencil, it will not absorb the paint.
7. When all areas have been stenciled in paisley, move to the next step.
8. Be sure to cover the fleur de lis image so it doesn’t accidentally get painted. Use painters tape or index cards but be sure the center image is protected. Spray the four stems.
9. When paint is dry remove the stencil. Wait 24 hours before attaching hot fix rhinestones with an iron or rhinestone setting tool. Place the stones by following some of the paisley patterns created with the paint.
We created this shirt from scratch with four design elements in mind, paisley, rhinestones, bronze fleur de lis, and matching serged seams. Of course, the first step was sewing the shirt. If you don’t sew, you can still enjoy the main element in this shirt, the fleur de lis. Just follow the directions using a ready-made shirt. You’ll find the free stencil at the bottom of this page. We used our favorite tee shirt pattern with aqua knit fabric and made one change - we sewed all the seams right side out (except for the shoulder seams) with a machine basting stitch. Then we serged the seams with luscious bronze metallic thread which unfortunately is really hard to capture in photos. Take our word for it, it’s stunning. So is the beautiful Bronze Have More Fun paint. The thread and paint match and really create a beautiful shirt. if you sew, how lucky you are to be able to pick all your own colors for each element! By the way, we finished this project with aqua rhinestones. We used an airbrush to apply the paint but you can do it with with fabric paint and brush or sponge.
Print stencils on heavy card stock or copy to blank stencil sheets.
