HALLOWEEN CATS ON A FENCE
If your cutie is yearning for this adorable shirt, you can make it for her, or make it together! The fence borders the entire hem, front and back with one cat perched on the back hip. Because the cat and fence stencil are separate, you can put cats anywhere you want. The witch stencil is also separate from the moon. We added a tiny amount of bling to this shirt by attaching yellow rhinestones for the cats’ eyes. We used an airbrush to apply the paint but you can do it with with fabric paint and brush or sponge.
Print stencils on heavy card stock or copy to blank stencil sheets.
DIRECTIONS
BEFORE PAINTING, ALWAYS WASH AND DRY FABRIC (WITHOUT FABRIC SOFTENER) AND COVER EXPOSED FABRIC TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL OVER SPRAY DURING PAINTING.
1. Match up the shirt’s side seams and shoulders and pin them together. This will help you find the accurate center front of the shirt. Iron a soft crease in the shirt from the neckline to the hem to mark the center. Slip cardboard between the shirt front and back to avoid transfer of paint between the layers.
2. Spray the back of the moon stencil with adhesive stencil spray. With a craft knife, cut out the grey moon in one whole piece. Set aside. Place the stencil on the shirt pressing down the cut edges. For a simple, uniform yellow moon, fill the open space with Blonde Ambition paint then go to step #6. For a moon like ours with shades of color, read step #3 - 5.
3. Trim the grey moon circle piece so it is 1/8” smaller around than the stencil opening. Center it inside the moon opening. With Blonde Ambition paint, spray between the grey piece and the stencil edges to create a solid circular yellow line.
4. When the paint is dry, remove the grey piece. Spray a light coat of Blonde Ambition across the entire circle.
5. Roughly rip a piece of paper towel into a curve to cover 1/3 of the moon. Hold it in place and spray a solid bright coating of Blonde Ambition on the exposed area. The paper towel will create a subtle and uneven mask between the light yellow and the brighter yellow paint in the moon. When dry, dust one quarter of the open area lightly with Mango Tango to create a harvest moon effect.
6. Spray adhesive on the back of the witch stencil. Cut out the grey witch. Position the stencil so that the open area slightly overlaps the moon. Press all edges of the stencil to the fabric. Spray the opening with Black Tie paint. When dry, remove stencil.
7. You will need more than one copy of the fence stencil to cover the entire hem of the shirt. Measure and determine how many you should print. Piece them together then spray the back of the complete fence stencil. Cut out the grey areas. Position the stencil top about 4 inches from the bottom of the shirt (depending on the size of the shirt) with fence ends overhanging the bottom hem. Press all fence boards in place. Spray openings with Black Tie.
8. When dry, remove the stencil. Place painters tape 1/2” down from the top of the fence posts. Do not press it only lightly so it will not pull up color when you remove it. Place another piece of tape 1/2” away from the first. Spray the space between the two with Black Tie to create the horizontal fence brace. When dry remove the tape.
9. Cut out the grey cat and spray adhesive on the stencil back. Position the cat stencil anywhere you want on the fence. Make the cat’s legs shorter if it will create a better balanced image. Spray the open area with Black Tie. When dry remove the stencil.
10. Attach hot fix rhinestones for the cat’s eyes with an iron or rhinestone applicator.
