FALLING LEAVES NAPKIN RING

-Painted Projects-

download instructions and pattern pieces

Autumn dinner parties just cry out for color on the table.  What better way to add some than with these double leaf napkin rings.  No matter how many you make, the materials are so inexpensive you’ll have money to spend on other decorations to create a festive table.  Alter the shape of these leaves slightly and you can produce the perfect holly napkin rings for the Christmas season.

DIRECTIONS

  1. 1.Download and print out the leaf and ring pattern pieces.

  2. 2.Cut 4 leaves from white fleece.  Cut one ring pattern from plastic mesh.  Use an emery board to smooth the rough plastic edges.

  3. 3.Place a piece of floral wire horizontally across two leaves.

  4. 4.Apply Elmer’s glue to the two remaining leaves and position them on top of the wire covered leaves.

  5. 5.When the glue has dried, spray paint the leaves with gold, red, yellow and green, applying paint at an angle and overlapping colors slightly.

gold                          red                      yellow                     green

  1. 6.Add a bit more of the green paint to the entire leaf after all colors have been applied.  Hold up the leaves and spray the outer edges green creating a dark outline for them and giving them definition.

  2. 7. Form a circle with the plastic mesh overlapping the ends 1/2”.  Thread string or embroidery floss into a needle and work the needle in an out of the mesh to secure the ring.

  3. 8. Paint the ring green.

  4. 9. When the paint is dry, attach one leaf over the right row of stitching on the mesh using a hot glue gun.

  5. 10. Attach the second leaf against the first.  There will be a space between their centers.

  6. 11. Stick a wire through a red bead and place it on a drop of hot glue in between the two leaves.

  7. 12.Add more beads as desired using the wire to hold the bead in place until the hot glue cools and sets.

  8. 13. Shape the leaves by bending the imbedded wire so the leaves curl up slightly.

Notes

The bottom shape of the leaves in our photos are different than those in the pattern piece because we originally planned each leaf to have a stem but changed our mind later.

We created our custom paint colors with the exception of the Jacquard Green.  You can use almost any gold, yellow, and red paint to get the same effect.
