DIRECTIONS

A rotary cutter with a wave edge blade was used to cut the flower petals.  The cutters and blades are available from Fiskars and Olfa.  There are many special blades available for scrapbooking which will not cut through fabric cleanly.   Use a blade designed to specifically cut fabric.

  1. 1.Each flower is made up of a large petal and a smaller one stacked on top of each other. Using the templates as your guide, cut out your petals with the rotary cutter.   We used seven flowers and ten leaves for our shirt.

  2. 2.After cutting the petals, fold them with right sides together along the fold line.  Snip shallow “v” shapes out of the edges where indicated with regular scissors.  If the “v”s are too deep the petals will flop over too much and lose their shape.

  3. 3.Stitch a line 1/8” from the petal fold, about 3/4” long.  Set aside the petals.

  4. 4.Cut out the leaves with regular scissors.

  5. 5.Sew a basting stitch down the center of each leaf and gather just enough to cause them to ripple.

  6. 6.Assemble the flowers by opening each folded petal flat with right side up.  Stack two petals with the larger on the bottom and the smaller on top.  The seam on the bottom petal should be horizontal and the seam of the top petal vertical when placed on the shirt.

  7. 7.Pin flower petals and leaves onto the shirt until you find an arrangement that appeals to you.

  8. 8.Permanently attach the leaves to the shirt by sewing down the center of each leaf, then removing the basting stitch.

  9. 9.Attach the two stacked flower petals by stitching down the vertical seam, stopping 1/2” from the top and bottom.

  10. 10.Finish by attaching seed pearls near the centers of each flower.

step 7

Would you pay $14 for this tee?  That’s what it cost us for materials.  We bought two identical shirts, one to fit, and one extra large to cut up for the flowers and leaves that transform what was a plain tee, into something special.  We found our shirts at Target.  Each was discounted and cost less than $7.  Visit your local Target, Walmart, Kmart, Kohl’s, Ross, or TJ Maxx, and you’ll no doubt find similar discounts.  It’s not necessary to hem the flowers or leaves, the edges are left raw.  The only sewing required is a little tuck in the flower petal, a basting stitch on the leaves, and a short stitch to attach the petals and leaves to the shirt.  We’ve included petal and leaf templates with our directions but feel free to make them in several different sizes, or maybe different colors?  Attach as many or as few flowers as you like.   We used two layers for each flower because our tissue knit fabric was very light weight, with no body.  Heavier knits will produce different results and may only need one layer.  Have fun with your creation!
