CHRISTMAS LIGHTS JUMPER

stencil & instructions

DIRECTIONS

BEFORE PAINTING, ALWAYS WASH AND DRY FABRIC (WITHOUT FABRIC SOFTENER) AND COVER EXPOSED FABRIC TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL OVER SPRAY DURING PAINTING.

  1. 1.Download and print out the stencils on heavy card stock or copy to blank stencil sheets.  It’s your choice to cut out as many stencils as you need to fill the length of your jumper, or to cut only one and keep repositioning it on the fabric.  I repositioned the stencil three times for a size five girls jumper that is 22” long.  The last bulb was omitted so that it would not intrude on the hemline.  The stencil is approximately 7” long.

  2. 2.With a craft knife, cut out the stencil’s grey areas.  Spray the back of the stencil with adhesive stencil spray.

  3. 3.Layout out your jumper pattern piece, right side up on your work surface.

  4. 4.Press the stencil onto the front starting at the shoulder seam and angled slightly to the left.

  5. 5.Place painters tape across the bulb areas of the stencils, leaving only the wire and the bulb sockets exposed.

  6. 6.Spray paint the exposed area with Black Tie paint.

  7. 7.When dry, remove the tape covering the bulbs.  Place painters tape on the stencil’s black painted areas.

  8. 8.Fabrics receive paint differently depending on their weave and fiber content.  Test yours to see if your colors show up as they should.  If they are faint, you may need to apply a white base coat to all the bulbs before adding each color.  Experiment on a scrap to determine how you should proceed.

  9. 9.The order of the paint colors are White Wedding, Mango Tango, Blue Suede Shoes, Blonde Ambition and Lucky Charm.

  10. 10.Once your colors are dry, carefully remove the stencil and reposition it aligning the painted cord end on the fabric with the cord end of the stencil.  Press the stencil into place.

  11. 11.Since the cord is still covered with tape, start this section by painting the bulbs first.  When they are dry, remove the tape and paint the black areas.

  12. 12.Continue moving the stencil down the jumper  until you have painted cord to the raw edge.

  13. 13.Use a permanent, black sharpie marker to close the open cord loops.

  14. 14.Sew the jumper.

Matching red glass buttons hold together the shoulders of this festive Christmas jumper.  A string of lights drapes down the left side in a colorful display.  I made my jumper but you could use the stencils to paint store bought clothing as well.  While this is a vertical display, the lights could just as well border the bottom of a dress or top.  Put your own spin on this collection of lights and make some little girl smile.  I used an airbrush to apply the paint

but you can do it with with

fabric paint and brush

or sponge.
