BUTTON AND BEADS EARRINGS

DIRECTIONS

A simple clump of twisted copper wire and bead ornament drops from a button to create this interesting earring.  I used 24 gauge Fun Wire to make the work easy on the fingers.  You can substitute any color button, beads, and wire combination to suite your taste.  The Fun Wire package gives you the choice of four colors.  (See the photo below.)  I found the ideal irregular spiral-shaped button to pull this design together.

Create The Beaded Ornament

  1. 1.Cut a piece of wire 14” long.  Fold it in half and add the first bead at the fold.  As you add beads in this project, alternate light and dark colors.

  2. 2.Grasp the first bead with pliers.

  3. 3.Twist the two lengths of wire three or four times.  The left and right wire should be the same length.

  4. 4.On the left wire, attach a bead 1/4” away from the twist.

  5. 5.Grasp the new bead and twist the two wires.

  6. 6.On the right wire, attach a bead and twist.

  7. 7.Cross the two lengths of wire in the center and twist.

  8. 8.Continue adding beads to the left and right wires, followed by a twist in the center until you have added a total of nine beads on the wire.

  9. 9.Twist the remaining ends of wire and slip one extra bead over the twisted ends pushing it down toward the other beads.  Bend the beaded section of the ornament in half so that the first bead meets the extra bead.  Twist the first bead slightly to secure it to the top section.  Bend and twist all beads to create a rounded shape or a shape that appeals to you.

Create The Earring Base And Copper Spiral

  1. 1.Glue an earring post to the back of the button.

  2. 2.Begin the copper wire spiral by wrapping the end of the wire over round nose pliers.

  3. 3.Grasp a portion of the loop with flat nose pliers.

  4. 4.Bend the wire in a circle with your fingers.  Work in small increments. Follow the shape of the loop.  Use the pliers only to support the wire, use your fingers to smooth the wire into shape.  Try to avoid sharp angles in the wire.

  5. 5.Create and close a loop at the end of the spiral wire.  Cut off the excess.  See Making Wire Loops/Eyes for help.

  6. 6.Make a loop in the twisted wires at the top of the ornament and attach it to the loop of the spiral.

  7. 7.Glue the spiral onto the button.  Also glue a bead into the space in the center of the spiral.
