DIRECTIONS

1. 1.Print out the floral border stencil.  Learn about stencil materials.  Extend the page by 1.25” on the top and bottom edges by taping on pieces of paper.  The new size page should measure 8.5” x 13.5”.
   

2. 2.With a yard stick draw a vertical line down the paper following the existing black lines on the stencil page.
   

3. 3.Trace the floral border onto the dull side of Reynolds Freezer Paper. Using a craft knife, cut out the stencil.
   

THE PILLOW FRONT

4. 4.Cut out a square of white fabric measuring 13.25”.  Place the Freezer Paper wax side down on the fabric.  Position the black vertical line of the stencil 3.5” from the left edge of fabric.
   

5. 5.Hold in place with painters tape then cut away the page to the left of the black vertical line and the tape.
   

6. 6.With a dry iron set on “cotton”, press the Freezer Paper to the white fabric.  Be sure all design edges adhere to the fabric. Place painters tape over the flowers.
   

7. 7.Protect areas of the fabric that will remain white, then spray spray all the open areas with Lucky Charm green paint including the entire left edge of the fabric.
   

8. 8.Remove the tape from the flowers.  Protect open green areas, then spray the flowers with Purple People Eater paint.
   

9. 9.When all the paint is dry, remove the tape and stencil.
   

10. 10.Cut a piece of yellow organza to measure 7” x 13.25”.  Align the left edge of the organza to the left edge of the pillow front and pin in place.
    

11. 11. Sew the organza to the pillow front by stitching .25” from the vertical green edge.
    

12. 12.Bring the right side of the organza over the left, creating a two layer cover over the green paint.  Press the seam flat and pin all layers together.
    

BUTTERFLY WINGS

13. 13.Print out the butterfly stencil.
    

14. 14.Cut two squares of yellow organza large enough to cover one of the butterflies.  Tape only one fabric square to the paper to hold in place while you trace the butterfly with a fine point marker.  Make it elaborate like the stencil or simplify it by drawing fewer curves. Do not use a solid line as the marker will drag on the fabric and distort the shape.  Instead create dots.  Place your dots slightly outside the butterfly border.
    

15. 15.Remove the fabric from the paper and pin the squares together.  Each butterfly is made of two layers of organza fabric sewed together.
    

16. 16.Using a satin stitch presser foot and a tight zigzag stitch, sew inside the dots you’ve marked on the fabric.  Lift the presser foot and turn the fabric to smoothly navigate angles and tight curves.
    

17. 17.Cut out two more organza squares and create the second butterfly in the same manner.
    

18. 18.OPTIONAL - Use green and purple permanent markers to add color to the wings.
    

19. 19.With sharp scissors, cut away organza outside stitching line and position the butterfly wings on the pillow front.  Sew down the center of the butterfly with the same zigzag stitch you used for the wings, to create the butterfly body.
    

PILLOW BACK & VELCRO CLOSURE

20. 20.Cut two pieces of fabric to measure 9.75” wide x 13.25 long.
    

21. 21.Fold and press a 1” hem the length of each piece.  The new measurement will be 8.75” x 13.25”. 
    

22. 22.On one piece, sew one half of a 3” velcro strip to the center of the hem.  Fold the 1” hem over again and sew close to the edge the entire length of the fabric.  The piece should now measure 7.75” x 13.25.
    

23. 23.On the second piece, fold the hem a second time and sew it close to the edge. 
    

24. 24.Mark the placement for the second Velcro on the other fabric piece to match up with the first.  Sew in place.
    

25. 25.Press the Velcro pieces together aligning the hemmed edges.  Pin the overlapped edges together to hold in place when finishing the pillow.
    

FINISH THE PILLOW

26. 26.Place wrong sides of front and back together.  Sew all four sides with a 5/8” seam.  Trim allowances.  Turn right side out and fill with a 12” pillow form or batting.
