Painted Asian Top

Asian styling is timeless and always fun to wear. We made this top to complement the Chinese parasol we bought on eBay. This was a costume for a Chinese New Year party but the top can be worn for any special occasion. The fabric you choose and the design you paint on it will set the mood. Free stencils for our design are included with the instructions below. Our shimmery red satin fabric gave the finished top a very festive look. We used Burda pattern # 8438. The design was applied with an airbrush but you can do it with a regular brush or sponge and fabric paint. We added details and shading with a small paint brush and finished with gold rhinestones applied to the center of each flower.

DIRECTIONS

1.Print out and cut all three stencils. Learn about stencil materials. If you print on card stock, spray the backs with repositionable stencil adhesive spray.
2.Cut out the front of the top and sew a basting stitch on the neckline 5/8” from the raw edge beginning at the shoulder and ending at the side seam. Use this stitching as a guide for placing the stencil. It will help you avoid painting too close to the final stitching line and prevent paint from ending up inside the seam allowance. With a normal length stitch, create the two darts and press.
3.Plan your design placement. Position stencil “A” on the fabric with the first flower petals on the center front. Position stencil “B”, then “C” arranging the design to curve down to the hip line. The size of your top will determine where the design will end. Be sure that painted areas won’t end up inside the side seam when the top is put together. Once you’re happy with your placement, you’re ready to paint.
4.Cover the darkest areas (we’ll call them bamboo) to be painted with painters tape. These areas were painted with green paint but appear black in our design because we sprayed the paint onto the fabric without a white base coat.
5.Spray all the open areas with White Wedding paint.
6.Cover everything but the flower petals. Spray only the outer edges of each petal once or twice to create a contrast from the interior petal. Let dry.
7.Cover all the flower petals with tape and uncover everything else. Spray all open areas with Lucky Charm paint. The bamboo color will look dark green or black depending on the color and type of fabric you use.
8.Remove all stencils.
9.Finishing Details: With a small brush, dab gold metallic paint at the centers of each petal. When dry, use a black permanent marker to create tiny stems in each flower’s center. Affix gold rhinestones to the flowers.
10.Sew your top following the pattern instructions.
