How To Add Color
To White Flowers
In Your Kitchen
If you’ve ever wished you could match or complement the color of your flowers to your table setting or party theme, now you can. I cannot guarantee this will work with every white flower available because I’ve only tried it with what I had available - an abundance of white roses.
This isn’t as much a “diva project” as it is a kind of science experiment. But when you’re done with your experiment, you’ll have something very unique for your home.
So what’s the magic to changing flowers from white to vibrant? Food coloring. As you’ll see, the three steps for adding color to your white flowers are simple. But first there are things you will want to know.
• The amount of water you use in the vase will determine the color intensity. Both roses pictured below were colored using red food dye. Interestingly, red food dye produces more of an orange color in flowers. If you like very soft colors like the rose on the left, use more water. If you like bolder colors, like the rose on the right, use very little water.
DIRECTIONS
1.Put about eight drops of food coloring in a narrow base vase.
2.Cut the flower stems at an angle and place the stems in the vase.
3.Add only enough water to cover the bottom of the flower stem if you want to produce bold color. Add more water for softer colors.
• The amount of water used will also determine how quickly your flower begins to color. The lighter orange rose took about three hours to begin showing color, while the darker one began changing in 15 minutes.
• Green and blue food coloring produce very true colors compared to the red. But you can create your own color by mixing food coloring as you would paint. We mixed red and yellow to produce a warm golden yellow. Try your own combinations. Or try taking bold to the extreme by using Neon food coloring now available at grocery stores. It includes the color purple.
• When a rose begins to change, the color will show up in the form of little veins or spots in the petals. Soon it will outline each petal with a strong line of color. Not all types of flowers will color the same way with the same markings, and using food coloring on flowers will not produce the solid color petals you find in nature.
