EVER WONDER WHAT IT FEELS LIKE TO
GET A PIE IN THE FACE?
Find out by inviting friends for an afternoon of pie slinging. Ask each guest to bring a cream pie. Pick names out of a hat to see who throws and who receives. Each guest should experience both by the end of the afternoon. Take photos of each pie toss, or better, video the action.
When everyone is done cleaning up, look at the photos or video together. Allow ample time for this hilarious portion of the party, especially if you’re playing back video. And don’t forget to watch the splatter in reverse! It’s always a big hit! Ask guests to vote for the best thrower and the best receiver and award them prizes.
CONTAINING THE MESS
It’s hardly possible to have a pie throwing party without creating a mess. A patio is the perfect venue for this event because it can easily be hosed down after the party. We positioned the pie receiver in front of a wall which was covered with clear plastic sheeting. We used painter’s tape to hold the plastic in place. We also covered the area under the receiver with plastic.
PROTECTING YOUR GUESTS
We cut a hole in a large piece of cardboard just big enough to allow guests to stick their head through. We covered and taped plastic sheeting to the cardboard, letting the sheeting hang down to the ground to protect the guest’s clothing and shoes. After putting their head through the hole the guest holds onto the sides of the cardboard, which helps deflect poorly aimed tosses. It also provides a marvelous splatter! Keep a hose hand for guests who need more than a wet-nap to wash off with.
RULES
There are very few rules. The thrower stands approximately six feet from the receiver, who should get hit with the pie he brought. The thrower is allowed two tries. If he completely misses his target throwing the first pie, he gets one more shot with one of your auxiliary pies.
WHAT YOU SHOULD SUPPLY
-
•Auxiliary pies - Have empty pie tins on hand and cans of whipped cream to fill them.
-
•Refreshments
-
•Shower caps
-
•Wet-naps, & towels
TIPS AND IDEAS
On the invitation, ask your guests to bring one pie per person and to be sure it’s a flavor they like because they will be eating it!
Or save everyone the expensive of buying pies. Instead, supply pie tins and whip cream for everyone. Because a real pie is heavier than a whipped cream filled tin, it carries more momentum making it easier to throw.
We found our cardboard piece in our own garage. If you don’t have any, ask friends who may have moved or received a large delivery. Also ask clerks at grocery or appliance stores.
Add fun to the party by painting messages or images on the cardboard. Maybe a colorful target around the hole?
