DIRECTIONS
-
1.Find the true straight edge of the fabric. Using a straight pin if necessary, pull threads from the weave on the raw edge until you find one thread that goes across the entire 58” width of the fabric. This is your straight edge. Measuring from this edge, mark and cut the fabric evenly at 78”.
-
2.Your piece is now 78”x 58”. Cut off one of the selvage edges and find the true straight edge for that side the same way you did in step one. Once you do, you will have a perfect 90 degree angle to use as a basis for the rest of your cutting.
-
3.Cut out the table runner first. From the long straight edge, mark with pins or tape, and cut at 13”. When you’re done, this piece will measure 78”X13”.
-
4.Set the piece aside and cut out the place mats next. Always be sure you are working with a perfect 90 degree angle before cutting. The four mats should measure 19”x13” each.
-
5.Begin your mat by pulling on one thread along the length and one thread along the width. If the threads don’t go the length of the mat, find one that does. These two threads may not be identical. One may be much thinner or a different texture than the other.
-
6.Place painter’s tape .50” in from all four straight edges and sew a thin zig-zag stitch just outside the edge of the tape which will later result in a .50” fringe. Using a matching thread color will ensure the zig-zag stitching disappears into the mat.
-
7.After stitching all four sides, begin pulling out threads from the weave. Stop when you reach the zig-zag stitch. Work one side at a time to create fringe on all sides. Follow these same steps for the other mats.
-
8.The runner is created the same way as the mats with one exception. Because the ends of the runner hang off the edge of the table we treated the 13” wide ends differently. Since the ends have a 4” drop, we placed our zig-zag stitch at 2” from the edge instead of .50”, which gives us a longer, more attractive fringe at the ends of the table.
