BOLSTER COVER DIRECTIONS

TABS

  1. 1.Cut out 10 bolster tabs, 5 for each bolster.  Each should measure 11”x5.25”.  With right sides together, sew the 11” length seam.  All seams in this project are 5/8”.  Trim the seam and turn the tab right side out.

  2. 2.Fold the tab in half.  Using a basting stitch, sew the two ends together .50” from the raw edges.  Each tab should now measure 5.5”x2”.

BOLSTER TOP PIECE

  1. 1.  Cut out the 4 top pieces, 2 for each bolster.  Each should measure 37.25x 2.75”.

  2. 2.  Lay a top piece on your workspace, right side up.  Position a tab .5/8”” from the left edge, and the raw edges flush with the upper edge of the piece.   Secure the tab with a pin.  Continue lining up and pining the next 4 tabs in the same way, with a 6.5” space between them.  The last tab should be positioned 5/8” from the right edge.

  3. 3.Lay another top piece over all the tabs, lining up the edges, with the wrong side of the fabric facing you.  Sew across the top through all thicknesses.

BOLSTER SIDE PIECE

  1. 1.  Cut out the 4 side pieces, 2 for each bolster.  Each should measure 31.25x 4.25”.  Fold one end of each piece at 1.5” and press.

BOLSTER BOTTOM PIECE

  1. 1.  Cut out the four bottom pieces, 2 for each bolster.  Each should measure 40.25x 2.75”.

  2. 2.  With a basting stitch, sew two of the bottom pieces with right sides together.  Press the seam open and position the wrong side of the zipper over the seam.  Place the zipper end .75” from the end of the bottom piece and sew in place with a permanent stitch.  Remove the basting stitch that holds the seam together and open the zipper.

ATTACHING SIDES TO BOTTOM AND TOP

  1. 1. With right sides together, line up the edges of the side piece with the fold, to the edge of the zippered bottom piece and stitch.  Repeat for the other side piece.

  2. 2. Lay the zippered section flat against the folded side section and pin in place.  The folds in the side pieces allow the zipper ends to remain tucked away and hidden from view (see the two color photos) in the bottom sides of the bolster.

  3. 3. Sew the raw edges of the side pieces to the edges of the top piece with right sides together.

ATTACHING FRONT AND BACK PIECES

You now have a 4 sided frame with tabs attached to the top and a zipper along the bottom.  The only step left is to attach the front and back pieces.

  1. 1. Cut out 4 pieces, 2 for each bolster, each measuring 37.25” x 31.25”.

  2. 2. With right sides together, match up the corners of a front piece to the corners of the frame.  Match and pin the edges together, then sew.  Be sure the fold in the side piece stays pinned together as you sew.  Finish the bolster by attaching the back piece in the same way.   After sewing, turn the bolster cover right side out and stuff it with the foam pad.

CONVERT YOUR

GUEST ROOM

From King to Twin

Here’s how to sew this versatile headboard and set up the beds.

  1. TIPS & SET UP

  2. • For a king bed arrangement, push twin beds together and top the mattresses with a layer of foam before putting on a king size mattress pad.  The foam makes it nearly impossible to detect where the two mattresses meet.

  3. • Two twin beds pushed together are slightly shorter than most kings.  We adjusted the length of the mattress pad and bottom sheet to fit.

  4. • The bolster rests behind the bed, not above it.  Position it about 6 inches below the top of the mattress.  Pushing the bed up against the bolster helps to keep it from shifting around over time.

  5. • The minimum length curtain rod for this project is 8”.

  6. • Since the tabs are positioned in the center of the 3” thick bolster, it requires that the rod stick out 1.5” from the wall.  That way the tabs and bolster hang straight down from the rod, and the bolster rests flush against the wall.

  7. • The hardware that came with the rod didn’t allow the rod to hang 1.5” away from the wall.  So we attached a 1.5” thick (approx.) decorative wood square to the wall.  We painted it the same color as the wall, then attached the hardware to the wood.
