The Ivory Embroidered Wrap

The finished wrap measures 26” by 70” and requires 2 yards of fabric.

DIRECTIONS

  1. 1.Cut your fabric into a 28”(width) by 72” (length)piece. Determine if your width ends are straight.  If they are not, even them out. The easiest way to do this is on a large cutting mat.  If you don’t own one, tape together two 12”X15” kitchen cutting mats to make a 30” work space.

LUSCIOUS FRINGED WRAP

  1. 9.Fold over one length of floss and thread the fold through a thick, large-eye embroidery needle (9A).  It’s important that the needle opening be large enough to easily thread the folded floss through it.  Pierce the needle through the fabric in the hemmed area .25” from the bottom and side edges.  Guide the floss part-way through to the other side, then remove the needle.   Pull the cut ends of floss through the fold (9B) until it loops snugly into the hemline.

  1. 2.Using a loose, removable stitch in a contrasting color, sew a straight line the length of the fabric, 3/8 from the edge.  Do not allow the stitching to gather the fabric.  Smooth it out as you sew.

  2. 3.Create another line of stitching on the same edge, only this time sew 5/8 from the first row of stitching.

  3. 4.Repeat these two lines of stitching on the opposite side.

  4. 5.Turn the hem on the 5/8” lines and press with an iron.  Then turn on the 3/8” lines of stitching and press, concealing the raw edge.  If the fabric does not take a sharp crease, use pins or long hand stitches to hold the hems in place.

  5. 6.Rethread the machine to match your fabric color.  With a permanent machine stitch, sew the hem in place, on both long edges, then remove the four rows of temporary stitching.

  6. 7.Follow steps 2-6 to hem the width edges of the wrap.

  7. 8.Cut 200 lengths of embroidery floss to about 6.5” long.  Floss is made up of several strands.  Do not separate them.  Use the floss strand as it is.

  1. TIPS & SHORTCUTS

  2. Choose a fabric that does not have an obvious right and wrong side.  Sheers work especially well, but you can use almost any fabric to make these wraps as long as it is soft and drapes well.

  3. If your fabric has multiple colors in it, or shades of one color as this blue wrap, consider buying floss in 2 colors and blending them to create the fringe.  We choose a mix of a dark blue and a light silver blue which creates a beautiful accent for this wrap.

9 A

  1. 10.Repeat folding and threading the floss and piercing the fabric at .25” intervals until you’ve worked across one edge of the wrap.  There should be approximately 100 pieces of fringe on one side.  (The wrap can also be worked at .50” intervals or larger, as we did with the blue wrap.  This required only 50 pieces of fringe on a side.)

  2. 11. After the fringe is attached, lay the wrap across a flat cutting surface.

  3. 12. Comb all the floss so it lays flat.  With painter’s tape, secure the floss to the surface 2 inches away from the hem edge (12A).  With a maker, draw a line across the tape 3” from the hem edge (12B). With a rotary cutter or a very sharp Exacto knife, slice along the marked line, cutting through the tape and the floss beneath.  When all the floss has been cut, remove the tape.

9 B

  1. Match the fabric’s length against the edge of a cutting mat, counter or table edge.  Lay a yard stick perpendicular to that edge, using it as a guide for cutting the  28” crooked edge.  Do the same with the other raw edge and you will have the straight ends you need to begin.
